Why buy toys* for children? Part 2 of 3.

Toys*! Why do we buy toys* for our children? Part 2 of 3. (how do you decide what toys to purchase for your infants and toddlers?)

Why do we buy toys* for our children? As parents, practically, you don’t need a reason to buy a toy. But is it the correct way?

Please also read Do children need a room full of toys? Rethink.

No, it is not. We cross by the shop and we buy a toy because our child likes those building blocks or cars.

Do read the part 1, to know the list of  occasions we buy toys*.

Part 2 of 3

Why do we buy toys for our children?
Here we can list the mindset while buying the toys. As parents, while purchasing toys, these things are to be kept in mind:

Here we can list the mindset of parents, while purchasing toy or games:

  • Purpose: While purchasing or choosing from a collection of toys*, one should always remember the difference between a toy with no objective and a toy serving an objective. An objective oriented toy will stimulate the senses in a child, giving a chance to explore things around. Example: if your child likes cars or teddy bear, making a collection of the same will not stimulate the senses in the child.

  • Value for Money: With prices for many toys being high because of an associated “brand” value, it is wise to see if the toy really is worth the money paid in terms of entertainment or learning for the child. Check if the toy is relevant for an age as well as cultural perspective. Example: the same kind of board games are offered by many companies. If the packaging or the brand name is making the difference in price, please choose wisely.

  • Simple Toys: In the era of digitization, toys are getting more confusing and complex day by day. The golden rule for young children – the simpler it is, the more likely that they will enjoy it. Complex toys could potentially confuse the child by giving too many inputs simultaneously. So, keep it simple yet challenging.

  • Appeal: Fancy super colorful and filled with imagery could hit the eyes initially, but children are likely to just ignore all this after a couple of times of playing with it. Example: Kinder joy, children buy this chocolate for the excitement of getting the tiny attractions in the package, they play with it, for some time. Then it goes to some corner of the toy box. What will excite them, is the challenge. Classic examples are tops like bey-blades & fidget spinners. This catches the fancy of all older children, because they enjoy the challenges that these toys pose. For the younger children, wooden blocks/toys score really high on this factor of appeal.

  • Age Appropriate: Many a time when the toy is bought, it has all the features that an individual is looking for, but somehow it has not taken the child’s fancy fully. Usually the reason for this is that it may not be age appropriate. In the initial years, every phase for a child is critical, and every age group has some milestones to be fulfilled. So if the toy bought for the child is not appropriate to his or her age, he or she will either: (a) get bored fast if the toy is below their age, or (b) they may get irritated if the toy’s complexity is too much for them to handle. It is always wise to match children’s age to the appropriate toys to make their time joyful and interesting.

  • Safety: For obvious reasons safety is the greatest concern. Sometimes a child puts a toy in his or her month to explore and understand more about it. Unaware of any dangers due to sharp corners, the paint used on the toy, they choose to experiment with the toy. Keeping all this in mind it is necessary to look for preferably CE certified ones or the ones you have checked and assured keeping all the above points in mind.

  • Battery Operated Toys: Battery operated toys are made up of typically metal or plastic. These will obviously need periodic battery replacing. This is not environmentally friendly both in terms of the battery as well as the outer metal/ plastic case. Battery operated toys* also tend to take away the manual element in toys which young children need. Pressing buttons to move cars is less preferable to moving the car around manually. They also need a constant supply of batteries to work.

  • Discovery and Exploration: While purchasing a toy, ensure it provides ample opportunities to explore and discover. When children start to discover different ways of playing with the toy, then they learn a lot while playing.

Buying specific toys for kids depends on kids interest & toy advantage to the kid growing age.

As a parent I would have always decided to buy educational toys & games for my kids which can enhance their learning skills & motivate them to get social as well.

To read in English: Do children need a room full of toys? Rethink.

Why buy toys for children? Part 1 of 3

Why do we buy toys for our children? As parents, practically, you don’t need a reason to buy toys. But is it the correct way?

Please also read Do children need a room full of toys? Rethink.

No, it is not. We cross by the shop and we buy a toy because our child likes those building blocks or cars.

Why do we buy toys for our children? Part 1 of 3.

Following could to some of the occasions we buy toys:

  • It is our child’s birthday, or any such occasion.
  • It is sibling’s birthday, and we don’t want the other child in the house to feel left out, so we buy two of them.
  • We are visiting a mall or shopping for something else and our child starts to disturb us. To do our work uninterrupted, we buy a diversion for our kid.
  • We are going outstation, and ourchild is not enjoying the event or trip, we buy one more diversion. Even if we have a shelf full at home.
  • We are with some friends and they bought a toy for their child, so we get influenced to buy one for our kid, because we must. (sounds crazy, but how many of us can say NO, to this)
  • If we have siblings fighting for the toys at home most of the time, we buy two toys next time, to avoid any fighting at home.
  • We are we happy for some reason, we buy toys for our kids
  • We are feeling  guilty of scolding, we buy toys.
  • Child got hurt, we buy toys to calm him or her down.
As parents/elders we are in these situations when we can not avoid gifting a new toy to our child. They deserve to have toys with them. Because it is their age to enjoy and play with toys.

As parents/elders we are in these situations when we can not avoid gifting a new toy to our child. They deserve to have toys with them. Because it is their age to enjoy and play with toys.

But can we just avoid doing it too much?

Why do we buy toys for our children? Part 1 of 3.

These points are not mentioned here,to stop giving toys to our children.

Read the above points again and you might notice, some buying could have been avoided.

Some suggestions, for the next time there is an urge to buy toys:

  • What’s the occasion?
  • Can buy a team game, instead of buying individual toys? (this might create a better environment at home. )
  • What kind of toy, my child is most interested in?
  • Do I really have to buy toys of the same nature, and make a collection of the same. ( if your child loves car, do you really need to buy twenty more cars, and make a collection out of it. Are you not limiting his or her imagination.)
  • Am I buying this toy because i like it and i want my child to like it too. (if this is the reason, please buy  that toy, and make sure you play that game with your child.)
  • Am I buying it as a showoff? (it is always better to develop the habit of sharing between the kids.
  • If you are feeling happy, give some time to your child. Your time is more valuable than the toy.
  • You have scolded your child for some reason, don’t buy gifts, take him outdoors, play with him, and slowly tell him your good intentions, worries and reason behind that scolding.
  • Child is hurt, and this might divert his attention. (very personal choice and differ from child to child)

Hope these points are of some use to you. Please mention in comments box if you have any other reason for buying toys, to the kids who already have plenty of toys to play.

Less toys more development

Development of a child will be more with lesser toys. While most of the space in our child’s almirah is filled with toys, we can become wise parents and learn to limit the number of toys that our kids have to play with.

Toys are not something to just play with. Toys form the building blocks for our child’s future and development. They teach our children about the world and about themselves. They send messages and communicate values. So, intelligent and wise parents think about what foundation is being laid by the toys that are given to their kids. And they want toys that lead to development of the child.

Wise parents also think about the number of toys that children are given. They understand that fewer toys will actually benefit their child’s development in the long-term:

  • Children learn to be more organised. They  live in a cleaner, tidier home. If you have children, you know that toy clutter can quickly take over an entire home. Fewer toys results in a less-cluttered, cleaner, healthier home.
Lesser toys will be more fruitful for the child's development. Having lesser toys, is a better idea to give your child a childhood full of learning. It is not that toys are not important for a child. They are important. But, we don't have to keep giving them a toy in the very first chance we get. Lesser toys will lead to better development of a child.

  • Increase in the creativity of a child. Too many toys prevent kids from fully developing their gift of imagination.  Although boredom set in during the initial stages of the experiment, the children soon began to use their basic surroundings to invent games and use imagination in their playing.
Lesser toys will be more fruitful for the child’s development.
  • Children learn perseverance. Children who have too many toys give up too quickly. If they have a toy that they can’t figure out, it will quickly be discarded for the sake of a different, easier one. Kids with fewer toys learn perseverance, patience, and determination.
Lesser toys will be more fruitful for the child’s development.
  • Children become less selfish. Kids who get everything they want believe they can have everything they want.

  •  Kids establish better social skills. Children with fewer toys learn how to develop interpersonal relationships with other kids and adults. They learn the give and take of a good conversation.

  • Children develop a sense of responsibility for their belongings. When kids have too many toys, they will naturally take less care of them. They will not learn to value them if there is always a replacement ready at hand. If you have a child who is constantly damaging their toys, just take a bunch away. He will quickly learn.
Lesser toys will be more fruitful for the child’s development.
  • Children experience more of nature. Children who do not have a basement full of toys are more apt to play outside and develop a deep appreciation for nature. They are also more likely to be involved in physical exercise which results in healthier and happier bodies.

  •  Due to Fewer options to play, kids develop a habit of reading, writing a learning faster than children who have lots of games to occupy their time. Fewer toys allows your children to love books, music, coloring, and painting. And a love for art will help them better appreciate beauty, emotion, and communication in their world.

  • Kids become more resourceful. Fewer toys causes children to become resourceful by solving problems with only the materials at hand. And resourcefulness is a gift with unlimited potential.
Lesser toys will be more fruitful for the child’s development.
  • Kids argue with each other less. This may seem counter-intuitive. Many parents believe that more toys will result in less fighting, because, there are more options available. However, the opposite is true far too often. Siblings argue about toys.

  •  Kids learn to find satisfaction outside of the toy store. True joy and contentment will never be found in the aisles of a toy store. Children need encouragement to live counter-cultural lives finding joy in things that truly last.

  • Increase in the attention span of a child. When too many toys are introduced into a child’s life, their are unable to pay attention to one set of toys. This decreases the attention span to a child. A child will rarely learn to fully appreciate the toy in front of them when there are countless options.

Having lesser toys, is a better idea to give your child a childhood full of learning. It is not that toys are not important for a child. They are important. But, we don’t have to keep giving them a toy in the very first chance we get.

Alternatively, we should limit the number of toys, and give our child a chance to explore things around him.

T-shirt bags, stop polythene bags, Go Green

T-shirt bags, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth. These are some of the concepts all of us hear now a days.

Say no to plastic bags save Earth

All of us think we will follow it now. Some of us try to follow it for a while, get appreciated by friends and family. But it fades away with time. Few of us take this concept and make it our habit. Being grown up it takes a little longer and special effort to convert this into a habit.

Recycled t-shirt bag, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth

We at our school shared this Recycled T-shirt bags, reusable bags, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth activity with students of Kindergarten and primary classes.

After doing this for years, I find, effort was worth.

Recycled t-shirt bag, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth

Recycled T-shirt bags: I have seen this work in many sites, and it really wanted to try it. So, for the first time in 2012, I tried this as a project for my son. It was to engage a four year old into some productive play, while stabilising hand eye coordination and developing motor skills.

He was so happy to use these new T-shirt bags, with so many cartoon characters printed on it. And he used it to carry his toys for one room to another.

These were the 5 most interesting ways of making reusable bags in 2012.

And then after seeing how T-shirt bags developed a positive habit to my son. I tried the same with students of my class. And then it became an annual activity.

Recycled t-shirt bag, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth

But year after year when we Google and found out more ideas to follow for T-shirt bags. The best 7 ideas that we found in 2019 are listed here for you:

Recycled t-shirt bag, stop polythene bags, Go Green, Save Earth

The concept that we are trying to give to our children might not be making a bag every time they see an old t- shirt.

But for me it was firstly to keep them engaged, secondly to make them learn something new and then most importantly to teach them how much joy they get by making something.

And the cherry on top were the teaching I could indirectly give to him about environment, why we should avoid plastic bags, what will be our contribution to saving Earth etc.

Present status, all the bags that we have are reusable and eco friendly.

Wishing happiness to the whole world.

Go Green. I am doing my bit.  There are many incidents, when my family or friends went shopping with me, and there is always a handy cloth bag that pops out of my purse or pocket. I always say no to polythene. But, how to help others do the same. I used my profession, teaching,as my opportunity. Every year, my students make a bag using their old t-shirt. Students enjoy doing this all by themselves. They are encouraged and appreciated on using these bags. It has become our annual activity. Make your own t-shirt bags

Save Earth, Bag your opportunity.

Appetite of your child makes you worry?

How much food my child needs? This is one more question that arises in parent’s mind everyday when they server them any of the meals. How much food my child needs? This question also pops up when people enquire and compare their child with other children.

How much food my child needs?

Healthy eating habits and stress free childhood is an indicator of healthy parenting, in the world of parenting.

The appetite of young children can change from one day to the next.

Parent’s mindsets while serving food to their child:

As parents or caregivers, you decide:

  • What kind of food we serve to our child. : As mother it becomes tough to choose between the healthy food that we want to serve to our children and whatever he eats.
  • What time of day are we serving food. As mothers, we just always look for a chance to feed our children. Feeding children is a full time project for any mother.
  • the place where the food will be served: that is a trick point. For most of the mothers, it is wherever child sits to eat. But honestly, especially in toddlers case, they never sit in one place, long enough to finish their meal.

Your child decides:

  • among all the food that is served, which ones are worth eating. And which are not appealing and can be rejected by showing tantrums.
  • how much should I eat: they also decide how hungry they are and what amount of food is ok for them.

How much food my child needs?

We will get the answer by trying the following ways which will increase your child’s appetite, and make you happy parents.

  • Start feeding your child in small amounts and let them re-ask if needed. Your child will respond according to his need.
  • Occasionally, your child will starve and eat a lot. So, give him the second serving. This way he will not see full plate at a time.
  • He  will eat less when not much Hungry. This is normal. If your child is not hungry, do not pressurize or bribe him to eat or to finish the meal.
  • Do not serve many munching in between, that reduces his craving for food at the time of meal.
  • If your child is active and happy then there is nothing to worry about. A starving child will not be active and happy throughout the day.
  • During the meal time if your child denied eating, please take away the food. Do not ask or pressurized him for eating for another 1-2hours. He will surely eat the next time you offer him.
  • Timely eating will also help in knowing the answer to your question.
  • If you still have any questions about your child’s development or hunger, talk to your doctor.

Happy childhood is every child’s right.

All the best wishes to you on this amazing journey. This will surely give us easy life.
